Matisyahu's "DAY" in Pittsburgh

"He didn't perform 'one day'!!"

"that's his best song!!!!!"

I felt the sentiment emanating from the other patrons flocking out of the concert hall behind me.  There was camaraderie in our silent but collaborative disappointment.

"How could an artist we so admire not bless us with the piece that most inspires us?"

Then i began to think of the man, and the man behind that used to be behind the beard.

What feeling that song may evoke for this man?

What circumstances was this man under when he wrote this piece of music?

Who are we to judge.
Who are we to take from this man what we cannot return.
Why not be appreciative of what he offered because we got him in the fullness of it all.

Especially since it was such a great concert!!

Matisyahu's Acoustic Sessions concert at the Carnegie music hall showcased jewish reggae singer Matisyahu in an acoustic set with a cello player and 2 guitarist.

We missed the opening act because we had to get tickets, possibly due to the common stereotypes, we're black and alcohol was involved, but we ended up with fairly comfortably seats.

Matisyahu entered the stage with a swift greeting and went straight into his set.

The acoustic session consisted of Matisyahu on vocals and occasional beatboxing, a guy on the cello, plucking and strumming and providing the bass tones for the quartet of musicians with a nice blend of electric and acoustic guitars to top off this musical delight.

After most songs Matisyahu would break into beatboxing and playing music. It worked well, the beatboxed drums added an energy to the songs that I thought was lacking, their were no actual drums in the set up. He was a really good beatboxer, the thump of the kick, the occasional reverb nod on the snare, my companions could not believe he did that with his mouth.

There were 5 lengths of cloth in the rear of the stage that displayed an ever changing array of very intense ambient colors and patterns. This along with the added visual impact of the synchronized light show seemed to relax your mind a bit to better enjoy the acoustics of the instruments.

Matisyahu performed songs mainly from the new album Spark Seeker so I recognized only a few of them.
Every so often though, you would see someone raise their hands or dance a little, but you never got that blast of excitement you get when you hear an artist performs song you know and can sing along to.

In the middle of the set there was a brief question and answer segment
(and someone compared him to Bob Marley…. not judging.. just informing),
a guest artist from Pittsburgh then back into the set.

the acoustics of the acoustic session was nice but I think some drums or some type of percussion instrument would have jazzed it up a bit as the songs did begin to get monotonous. Everyone ,however,  seemed to appreciate what was given but we all left wanting for more.

So many of the classics we would have loved to hear just a little piece of.

I wish i could have heard Matisyahu perform, "one day"

…ohh well maybe one day.

PROUD OF SIN (VIDEO INSIDE)

Concepts in music seem to be frequenting every corner of the spectrum , you have the "positive" music, the sexual music, the spiritual music, Godly music, Demonic music ..... you describe it ... there is that type of music

J Yungg's "Sinner's Prayer" (released late 2012) seemed to have an interesting twist to it when we first heard the track.
Here is a man asking God for forgiveness of him "SINNING BUT WINNING" but in the same breath bragging about his "SINNING BUT WINNING"

APOLOGETIC WITH NO INTENTION TO STOP
The song makes reference to power in rings, which is directly derived from Urban Legends believed to by a certain demographic in Jamaica

Add Free masonry to the equation, as J Yungg is seen donning a free mason ring in the music video, and opinions about this witty song would be equivalent to my description of music concepts in the opening paragraph.

Whether you think the song is about "making money", "scamming" or even .......
"selling your soul" .... Most agree that J Yungg's Sinner's Prayer has the potential to be the anthem for whatever cause or interpretation you deem appropriate

REGGAE SPORTS

I have the strenuous job of writing an article for www.pittsburghreggae.net twice a week.
I woke up today, sunday morning, thinking what the @#$& am I gonna write about today.
I started watching the first of 2 soccer games which were tagged

"the games before the game"

It is after all Super Bowl Sunday

"GO STEELERS!!!!!!"

And before you turn into Albert Einstein and tell me something about the 2013 Super Bowl ........
pause for a second

This is a Pittsburgh website

and if you don't know nuttn about Pittsburgh lemme share something with you ....

NEVER TRY TO CORRECT A PITTSBURGHER WHEN THEY EXCITINGLY SAY ..........

"GO STEELERS!!!!!!"

I light bulb went off!!!

Why not write about reggae and sports ?

REGGAE SPORTS

What is reggae sports?

Not sure about you but I had no clue

So I googled it

I learned that there are some people trying to hustle the word reggae to sell some t-shirts and hoodies and I also learned that its cool to say you are into reggae and sports on you dating profile

eg. datehookup.com, lavalife, where ever you have your profile ...

adultfriendfinder ? I dunno lol

But basically google didn't give me anything sporty enough or "reggae" enough to add useful content to my "reggae sports" article

let me just use what comes to mind when I blend the two
  1. The Jamaican National Soccer team is called the "Reggae Boys"
  2.  Usain Bolt the fastest man in the world (to date) is a gaza fan and busts reggae dance moves after he wins races
  3. Celebrity soccer games are common events for reggae promoters worldwide and feature dancehall/reggae stars competing
  4.  Bob Marley was a known lover of soccer
  5.  Every soccer game in jamaica reggae/dancehall a beat in all intermission somewhere on the complex
  6. The jamaican bobsled team (not sure how this is related but we working with it lol)
  7. On February 3rd, 2013 www.pittsburghreggae.net wrote an article about "REGGAE SPORTS"

ORIEL'S CONFIDENCE

                "NO NO DEM NAH ........"
"DEM NAH GO TEK MY STRENGTH...... "
             "NO NO DEM NAH....... "
             "DESTROY MY CONFIDENCE"

We got a sneak peek of this inspirational ballad by Oriel in the Lamar Clan Studios several months ago.
 Our initial reaction was,

"HE SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THE MARLEYS"

Infectious melodies combined with a near perfect delivery made us all at Pittsburgh Reggae Dat Net believers.
Something special is happening right here in the burgh.

"Oriel is on his way to being a major player in reggae music and it will happen as soon as he gets the exposure and recognition he deserves."

            "Oriel a my artist"

"If da yute ya no buss, mi done wid music"

"Wait til yu hear 'Down Where I Live'"

Were some of the comments we heard that day in the studio.

Over the fall Oriel made a promotional trip to Jamaica (the hub of dancehall/reggae music) and the response was overwhelming.
I guess Oriel's music has the power to instantly transform average listeners in to fans
            Momentum is building
            The music is spreading
1000 fans is on its way to being 100,000 fans
Wiz Khalifa highlighted Pittsburgh on the hip hop scene
Lets help Oriel highlight Pittsburgh on the reggae scene

Below is the OFFICIAL VIDEO of CONFIDENCE shot on location in Jamaica by Nordia Rose

REGGAE UNITY ... in Pittsburgh

"2013 appears to be the year or REGGAE UNITY in Pittsburgh,"
claimed dancehall dj Fudgie Springer smilingly when ask by Pittsburgh Reggae about what to expect on the Pittsburgh Reggae Scene in 2013.

Springer further elaborated and we learned of a "Sound man/ DJ meeting" held at Taboo late last year. The purpose of the gathering was to bring the key players together and work towards getting the scene back on track.

To say in 2012 the reggae scene was poor would not necessarily be an accurate statement. We had big reggae artists artists from jamaica here such as Bugle, Elephant man, Junior Reid, Fambo just to name a few, we've have international Djs in town like Gary Chucks, Razz and Biggy, Stone Love . So from an entertainment value standpoint the scene was pretty nice in 2012.

The major problem, however, is that most of our local reggae lovers will be as surprised as you just were when they read the names mentioned in the previous paragraph. So awareness is a huge issue.

Another thing that hindered the scene was favoritism: Some people only going to certain people's parties or just going to parties that a particular sound/dj play. So not only were there a lot of reggae listeners that didn't know about the reggae events but the ones that did were divided.

Compound this with the fact that the reggae crowd always come late (so early people who are unaware will probably leave and not come back)

YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE PITTSBURGH REGGAE SCENE IN 2012 HAD ITS ISSUES

" TEAM - Together Everyone Achieves More "
This is a corny overused cliche that us a pittsburgh reggae dat net in this scenario have no problem using.
Reggae Unity in Pittsburgh as agreed upon by members of Vybz Machine, Gangsta Shack, Israel Vibes, Dan Dabber, Levicticus, Green Rose, Force 15, and Whyte Lyon will include

  1. Rotations of the aforementioned DJs at The Spot on Thursdays and at the weekly parties at Taboo.
  2. More frequent guest appearances at BCIF Fridays at Capri
  3. Lots of cross promotion, Djs plugging other peoples events and attending (supporting) other people's events
  4. Favoritism basically solved since the Djs frequently DJ together
  5. Increased flyering and creatives means of increasing the awareness
  6. an improved pittsburghreggae.net

REGGAE UNITY in Pittsburgh basically improves every single reggae event.

If you are a reggae/dancehall/soca lover. If you appreciate Caribbean music and you live or party in or around the Pittsburgh area we beseech you to join the movement.
More people who are actually into reggae attending our events make reggae parties that much more fun
A bigger fan base gives us the opportunity to bring the biggest and hottest reggae acts to town (who would like to see Mavado or Damian Marley or Popcaan at a party in Pittsburgh?)

We remember the days of Safari and Club 822 and even prior to that when DJ Bubbles used to kill it at Frankies and Club 168 but we are also looking forward to the better days and more exciting stories,
If you are into reggae we need you on the team.
